Normally after the o/s is loaded " windows comes up with [you must restart your computer....}" and I presume the rebooting was this way.

Are you able to get into bios/device manager and see whether the HDD is detected?

The reasons for(1)is not clear (your system clock not ok?)

for(2) if you have not been quick enough (say within 5/7 seconds) then your cmos settings may have been disturbed and may have to be reset.
