Program Title: Best Practices for Library Accessibility and Universal
Design
Time: Monday, June 27, 10:30am - 12:00 noon
Location: ALA Annual Meting Chicago, Convention Center, Room S-503

Program Description: Best Practices for accomodating library employees
and patrons with disabilities. A showcase of inclusion, universal design
and best practices for programs, facilities and services. Panelists will
discuss low cost and no cost accommodations as well as assessing,
budgeting and marketing assistive technology options.

Universal Design means constructing environments that provide barrier
free access, efficient layout and adaptable furnishings to fit a full
range of human interaction. The goal of universal design is to meet the
current and changing needs of library patrons and employees. One example
of universal design is the construction of "curb cuts" in sidewalks.
Anyone who use strollers, wheelchairs, walkers, or rolling luggage
appreciates the value of this universal design feature.

Public and academic libraries balance issues of accessibility while
budgeting, planning and marketing their programs, facilities and
services. This panel program provides a range of resources for universal
design elements that current libraries can implement to benefit employee
and patrons. While these elements benefit persons with disablities,
virtually everyone can benefit by these innovations.
