And here I thought that the extension of daylight savings time was to save
energy. Where have I been?

Colin,

Daylight Saving Time always used to end on the last Sunday morning of
October. However, Guy Fawkes Day is celebrated peculiarly in the US on the
day before All Saints' Day, children going disguised in costumes from house
to house and threatening the people in each if not given sweets.

To allow these marauding children to carry out their mischief while some
daylight still lasts, the conversion to Standard Time has been postponed
from now on to take place at 2 a.m. on the first Sunday of November.

So the coming week will be one of great confusion, but the dust may settle
after 4 November.
