Hello:
I am working with someone who has spacing between tab stops in Microsoft
Word 2003 that is set to 1.75 inches. She wants to change it to 0.5
inches and she wants this change to be made as a default for all word
documents.
I helped her go into the format menu of word, then down to tabs and she
pressed enter. Then, she tabbed one time to the edit box that says
"Default spacing for tab stops" and typed ".5" into the box. She then
tabbed and pressed "ok." However, this doesn't make the change
permanent in word. Because, when you close down word and re-start it,
the tab stop spacing goes back to what it was before, in this case, 1.75
inches.
I tried several things. First, after changing tab stop spacing, I tried
going to the save as icon on the file menu, selecting document templates
and saving to the "normal.dot" file. Word wouldn't let me do this
because it says it couldn't save to a file that is already open. I
looked again at the tabs dialog and there is no default button for it
like there is for other format options.
I looked both in Microsoft Word help and in the Microsoft Support
Knowledge base and I cannot find anything that tells me how to change
the spacing between tab stops and make it the default. If anyone has
any ideas on how this can be done, please let me know. I could save the
modified file as a document template and copy it to "normal.dot," but
then I would need to go into the templates folder to do this.
