The Secretary of State
Department of State for Communication, Information and Technology
GRTS Building, Kanifing
Dear Sir,
PROPOSED FOOTBALL MATCH
During a meeting of the new GPU executive on Friday to discuss among other
things the proposed football match between the media and the government, it
was unanimously decided that the GPU were not in a position to participate
in it
While we appreciate Dr. Amadou Scattred Janneh’s good intentions to use the
proposed football match as part of his noble efforts to bring the two
parties closer, but we are of the view that it should have been more
appropriate to seal it with the match rather than use it as the opening
salvo.
Therefore, while we are still quite ready and willing to continue the
dialogue initiated by him, but we feel that the football match could wait
until other more tangible issues are dealt with. We are for instance still
in a period of mourning for our colleague the late Deyda Hydara, who was
killed last December and whose demise is still fresh in our minds.
We also feel that the government, particularly President Jammeh should,
through his actions and utterances, show more goodwill and regard to the
independent media than has been so far the case.
Yours faithfully
Madi M. K. Ceesay
President
