Esh Foods Recalls Cream Cheese Spreads
By FDA
Aug 15, 2005, 13:45

FDA Notifies Consumers of Recall of Esh Foods Cream Cheese Spreads Due to
Undeclared Allergens

FDA today is notifying consumers that Esh Foods LLC, Gordonville, PA, is
recalling its 5 lb bulk packages and smaller unlabeled containers of
Crabmeat Cocktail Cream Cheese, Shrimp Cream Cheese and Plain Whipped Cream
Cheese spreads because they may contain undeclared fish, eggs, wheat, milk,
shrimp, soy and crab. People who have allergies to these undeclared
ingredients run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if
they consume the products. The spreads were distributed in New Jersey,
Maryland and Pennsylvania.

The 5 lb bulk packages of the cream cheese spreads have an Esh Foods label
on top of the container with a Julian date of #202. Spreads from these large
containers were transferred to smaller, unlabeled containers and sold at
farmers markets.

No illnesses have been reported to date.

The recall was initiated after it was discovered that the spreads were
distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of fish, eggs,
wheat, milk, shrimp, soy and crab. Subsequent investigation indicates the
problem was caused by temporary breakdown in the company's production and
packaging processes.

Esh has stopped production of the cream cheese spreads until the company and
FDA are certain that the labeling error has been corrected.

Consumers who have purchased packages of unlabeled cream cheeses from retail
outlets in New Jersey, Maryland or Pennsylvania should contact the place of
purchase to determine if their product is under recall. Consumers with
questions can also contact Jason Stoltzfus at 717-768-8542.
