Yah but if you're on an extended trip then ...
My solution is still a couple of connectors such as the
Anderson Power Pole or something else that can't be
connected wrong. FUse it at the battery connection, fuse it
at the radio end as well. pRovide more than one off some
rather heavy gauge wire, draft a friend to help.

IF your family uses more than one vehicle set each one up
with a couple of these connectors. sEt up your gear with
matching connectors, that way you can just plug in, stick
the ol' mag mount on the roof and you've got power so long
as the vehicle has power.
WHEn I'm finished with the van there will be three, one for
my cw watt meter, one for the hf rig and one for the dual
band amp.
A sighted mechanical friend can help you find knockouts in
the firewall easily enough. That way you're prepared for
either an extended trip or just a short jaunt.
