As president of the Topeka Celiac Support Group, I have been communicating
with a college-age gal and her mother regarding her condition. They first
called me several months ago after seeing a doctor and that doctor said she
had celiac. Then she was told maybe not, etc., etc., etc. I am cutting and
pasting her mother's comments to me today and see if any of you recognize
the symptoms.

"She has been experiencing a lot of fatigue so we went to Dr. Franz last
week. She told her to take B12 and a multi-vitamin. She also is nauseas
most of the time and I see it getting worse over the last couple of months
and she doesn't like to eat because she is so quezy and her stomach cramps a
lot. Yesterday I got her in to a Dr. (gastroenterologist) who is considered
good. Long story short, he said the mono test could have been
false-positive, the test doesn't mean a thing. (She had been told she had
mono). He said if she hasn't tested positive for celiac and was given the
proper tests, he doesn't think she has it and would like her to eventually
start introducing wheat back into her diet. This did not go over well with
either of us. He said she may have chronic fatigue syndrome and a slow
digestive system. He gave her a drug that they give women for morning
sickness. She took it last night and it worked. However, she was very upset
about the celiac diagnosis. She argued with him and she said she would like
for someone to take her serious about celiac. Bottom line is if she eats
wheat, gluten, she is sick and she doesn't want to try gluten.

A comment was made by the doctor that seems strange: He said he didn't want
her to be lumped with the celiac group since she was so young because then
they are grouped with fibromialga and that bunch!!!!! What in the world
does that mean???

If any of you recognize any of this, please e-mail me. Anyone have the
"slow digestive system"? I realize we can't diagnose this gal but I sure
want to help her. Before going on the GF diet, she hardly left her own
home. She didn't eat for two days so she could go to her senior prom. Now
you see why she doesn't want to go back on the gluten.

Thanks for any help and I will summarize. This freshman college gal is so
sweet and deserves to feel better as does everyone.

Sharon Larson

Topeka Celiac Support Group President
