Hello and thanks for all the responses to Equal sweetener.
Equal (NutraSweet) is g.f. It does have a chemical structure similar to MSG and cause a reaction in those who don't tolerate MSG.
Equal and Splenda are both gluten-free.
Just as an FYI - Coke in Canada uses sugar from cane sugar while in the USA
it uses corn syrup. I know some people who are real Coke addicts who bring
their own Canadian "Coke" with them when the travel state side.
According to Equal and Splenda's customer service departments, both are
gluten-free. I prefer Splenda because Equal gives me headaches, but I
have checked on both. (A lot of times, a soft drink with Splenda just
isn't available.) Equal's customer service phone number is
1-800-323-5316 if you want to double check. Splenda's customer service
number is 1-800-7-SPLENDA.
Whether it is gluten free or not the research is now showing it is not safe. There is actually a law suite in California concerning this. Why not try stevia or lo han.
Real Coke also has Fructose. Some celiacs react badly to Fructose.
Yes, equal is gf. Many with celiac have a fructose intolerance (after the
tips of villi that produce lactase are destroyed, the middle sections that
let you digest fructose go next) until they heal. Since High Fructose Corn
Syrup (HFCS) is what sweetens most sodas, many have problems with it for a
while after diagnosis.
Splenda is better tasting than equal and is gluten free. The last time I checked equal was gluten free but don't hold me to that. Splenda can be used to cook and bake with unlike Equal. And it contains no calories just as equal. They also have them in individual packets or in bulk to be used cup for cup as sugar in your favorite dishes. I have no financial interest in Splenda, other than a regular user of this product. I try not to use sugar in most of the things that I cook anymore.
