I am the Tony to whose message you refer.

Ordinarily, I am not given to hurling salvos or offering criticism with
little forethought. I posted the message to a limited listserv without
intending it to go further, but that is the chance taken by posting a
cautionary note to any listserv.

I suspect that many users of Jaws will encounter few problems with 7.1,
however, I stand by my comments.

First, After a number of notes from Freedom Scientific tech support to the
contrary, I did receive an acknowledgement that support had been dropped for
a number of older synthesizers used in the 9X environment including the
DoubleTalk PC. Apparently the Wix installer does not install 16 bit drivers.
Some of us prefer to use our sound cards for other purposes or don't prefer
using eloquence. Some of us, are at times, also force to work under a number
of older Windows versions.

Second, I've found in a number of shared access applications in my work
environment that several types of buttons no longer are spoken in 7.1.

Third, in outlook, Office 2003, when employing the day view in shared
calendars, , the announcement of dates, times, and appointments is no longer
spoken.

Because in my work I depend heavily on the last two items, I have little
choice but to revert to 7.0. For some users reverting back to the prior
version could prove difficult, hence my cautionary remarks. I've informed
Freedom Scientific of my observations and would hope that these bugs will be
addressed shortly.

Subject: [VICUG-L] Upgrading to JAWS 7.1

| Hello,
| Yesterday I posted the below message and I wanted to thank all of
| those (Mark, Amy, Christopher, Alex) who replied with their thoughts. I
| found your input helpful and reassuring.
| Also, about 30 minutes after my message appeared on the list, Eric
| Damery from Freedom Scientific called me to discuss the upgrade. He
| mentioned that since last Saturday there have been over 1000 downloads
| with few support calls.
|
| Thank you, Stewart

| Hello all,
| I was all set to download version 7.1 until I received this e-mail.
| Anyone on this list having the same experiences?
| Thank you and read on.

| Regarding the release of Jaws 7.1, over the last several months I've
| been
| testing the beta releases and have downloaded the final releases of
| 7.1,
| both the professional version edition and the windows 98 edition.
| I've been extremely unsatisfied with the release. Many bug fixes
| claimed by
| Freedom Scientific to have been addressed during the beta tests remain.
| A
| number of applications which worked perfectly well for me in version
| 7.0,
| now have problems including some form views in Access. Also, support
| for
| quite a few of the older synthesizers in the Windows 98 edition has
| been
| dropped.
| assessments of the release on a number of the Jaws related listservs
| has
| been uniformly negative. For what it's worth, I would strongly suggest
| avoiding this release.
