And what does the shop say about this?

George.

Subject: [VICUG-L] Component failure when cable is attached

Hello,

I recently had a new power source installed into my old DOS
computer. That and a new fan were the only things that were
replaced. The shop also did a check of the hard drive, which
is fine.

Here's the strange thing. When I plug my scanner into the
computer's port, the scanner goes into a semi-off mode that
I've never encountered before.

When I pull the data cable either out of the back of the
computer, or out of the side of the scanner, the scanner
makes the familiar sounds of being turned on and ready to
scan. With these sounds, I can see a bright ON light. But
when I plug the cable in, that light goes off, and a much
smaller indicator light remains on.

Also, with the cable in, the OSCAR OCR/scanning program
says, "scanner not available" when I give the command to
scan.

What can be going on here? I've used this system for many
years and never had this problem.

Thanks,
Peter
