I've been following this thread, and I have a laptop with WXPMC 05 installed
on it. The Belarc Advisor reports it as WXP Professional.
Just thought you'd like to know.

I believe it is the XP Home version with additional Media Center
software. SP2 may or may not be in place, but you can download the
upgrade from Microsoft if it hasn't automatically upgraded already. If
the computer has a tv tuner card in place or other av inputs, the media
center software would facilitate making dvd's from video cameras/tape,
recording tv/cable broadcasts, or using the computer to pause TV shows
while you answer the phone, etc.
