The President Jammeh Goes On Campaign Trail On Friday By The Gambia Journal
Sep 1, 2006, 08:24
GRTS radio and television on Thursday August 31st, announced that President Jammeh's many times planed and abandoned "Dialogue With The People's Tour" will start on Friday 1st of September 2006 and ends on the 19th September. The tour which is an annual constitutional requirement for the President, has not been done for about three years. Last month President Jammeh cancelled a tour shortly before the announced date. That was the forth time the tour was announced and cancelled. The Gambian leader has not been on any tour since the alleged coup attempt of March 21st. The 18-day tour is expected to leave government on virtual stand as Mr. Jammeh usually takes with him the whole senior civil service corps on such tours. A local business man, who as a vendor, supplies government offices with stationery, told the Gambia Journal that "nothing will work for over twenty days from now:" Though the tour is supposed to be a presidential function, Mr, Jammeh is expected to use it as a campaign exercise. He is also expected to be dishing out lot of money in his usual cash-for -votes campaign. He will be starting the tour at the North Bank ferry terminus of Barra where it was announced, he will visit some public projects. He is also expected to pay an inspection tour of a rural electrification project at Tubakolong, 26 kilometers from Barra.
