This definition from Easton's 1897 Bible Dictionary may surprise you. It
did me. Mercy
compassion for the miserable. Its object is misery. By the atoning sacrifice
of Christ
a way is open for the exercise of mercy towards the sons of men, in harmony
with
the demands of truth and righteousness
Mercy is also a Christian grace.

Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary refers to God's mercy as the source for
all our hope and comfort. If we think then about having access to God's
mercy in Christ, what does that mean practically speaking applying it
personally.

Psalms 136:1-3:

Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good!
For His mercy endures forever.

Oh, give thanks to the God of gods!
For His mercy endures forever.

Oh, give thanks to the Lord of lords!
For His mercy endures forever: (NKJV)
