BACKGROUND:
The Surgeon General's Call to Action to Improve the Health and Wellness of
Persons with Disabilities focuses on the challenges to health and wellness
faced by individuals with disabilities of all kinds. Developed by the
Surgeon General in collaboration with the Department's Office on Disability,
this first-ever Surgeon General's Call to Action on disability describes the
particular challenges to health and well-being faced by persons of all ages
with disabilities. It identifies an overarching principle and four goals
that, together, can help the nearly 54 million Americans of all ages who
have been born with or have acquired disabilities during their lifetimes to
experience full, rewarding, and healthy lives as contributing members of
their communities. Tuesday, July 26 is the 15th anniversary of the signing
of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
