actually, if you put the jacks side by site, they're not that much smaller,
a little but not over all that much, the difference though, is the round
connectors you solder wires to the back direct where as the other ones,
they're made to be soldered right to a circuit board, and in that, I guess
they save room there but I really like the old style 8 pin connectors much
better.

I don't know if they're cheaper, but they're a lot smaller than the
8-pin connectors.  I think size is the important issue in new
radios.  There's so much stuff crammed in to a very small space, and
even if it looks like there might be room on the front panel, there's
probably none behind it.
