I have been asked by the public education dept. of a local hospital
to give a presentation on CD on Oct. 6. This is exciting because (a)
they provide excellent publicity; (b) we're hoping to get our group
going again, and (c) maybe some people in the medical field will
attend. My working title is "CELIAC DISEASE: Symptoms, Strategies,
and Stresses."
I'm looking for good hand-outs, so if you have some in digital
format, feel free to pass them along. What do you consider the best
overall resources? The first books that come to mind include
"Gluten-Free 101" by Carol Fenster and and Donna Korn's book. Hmmm,
maybe I should order them ASAP, since I gave away my 101 book and I
really should have copies of both to hold up.
Any on-line articles that have been particularly helpful to you? If
you could hand over a one-page sheet of suggestions to doctors and
their staffs, what would it include? Do you have any good tips for
educating medical personnel about CD when they don't know much about
it? What do you give to teachers and school personnel about your
celiac youngster? How do you work with your pharmacist? How do you
manage a hospital stay?
What about [free] dining cards? Does anybody have a list of
suggestions for first-time G-F shoppers? I plan to survey the two
local health food stores to see what G-F specialty items they have in
stock. Maybe I can persuade them to give me some samples ...
The presentation is at lunchtime, so I'll probably have some kind of
g-f food available. Any suggestions for easy-to-fix lunch goodies
using mainstream ingredients? I really don't want to be baking too
much (except maybe for desserts), so sandwiches aren't an option.
Besides, here in the land of pinto beans, green chile, and locally
made tortillas, who wants sandwiches anyway??? :)
THANKS for all your help! I'm looking forward to being bombarded with
helpful messages, and I'll certainly be happy to share any materials
I generate.

***Everybody in southern NM and the El Paso area, please put Oct. 6,
11:30 a.m. at Mountainview Medical Center, on your calendars. If you
can't make it during the day, please let me know, and I'll try to
figure out an evening event as well.
