NDIS is a standard (in various versions) for how NIC drivers connect to
the OS networking code; my guess would be that NDISHLP.SYS is/was a wrapper
to handle older Windows NIC drivers and work with newer Windows OS versions
that require NDIS. (I *think* it stands for something like "Network Device
(Driver?) Interface Standard".) Many old NICs were built to emulate the
Novell NE2000 NIC interface, and NDISHLP.SYS probably supports that too.

I had read the Larry's message as indicating that the load of NDISHLP.SYS
was failing because that file was missing, and assumed it was therefore not
needed. On re-reading, it looks like the file exists and the load is
failing because there is no NIC present (and therefore NDISHLP.SYS is not
needed).

I believe LSL stands for Link Socket Layer, and on the other I'm not sure beyond possibly ND=Novell Directory and, perhaps, S=Services (I=Indexing?) and HLP=Help on the other. In any case, I believe your error messages are a result of the command line before them attempting to execute when there is no Novell networking present. As David has pointed out, the generic CD driver may have been necessary to get the hardware to a point where
it could utilize the CD-ROM, but may not be necessary any longer with the operating system installed.
