Colin,
Thanks for the input. I have one more question about the interface.
How do I go about installing it? Is it a PCI device where I would have to
take the case off my computer? I would prefer to have an external device,
which I could connect to my USB, communications, or parallel port. Thanks
again.
Eric

you can get an interface for running echolink with any radio capable of
transmitting and receiving on amature bands.
Go to www.echolink.org and find the section that deals with interfaces.
You can get one from anywhere from 40 to 150 bucks.
Most of them you can get custom made for your rig and audio connections.
The interfaces are easiest because they are plug and play...you plug in to
the audio jacks on your sound card, you plug the cable into the mike jack on
the radio and into the audio output jack on the radio, and you are set.
All auto keying is done by the interface and you dont have to try and figure
out an auto keying vox settup or a nifty way of keying the radio.
I checked with one of the dealers on that site and he can build a customed
made board in a small shielded box for around $70 with all the appropriate
jacks you need for the radio you want to use.
