Or how about what they didn't eat?  If fruit and vegetable consumption is
associated with a protective effect from colon cancer, maybe the "high meat
consumption" group ate fewer fruits and vegetables?  In that case, meat
consumption may not be associated with colon cancer, but low intake of
fruits and vegetables may be associated.
