Hello all,

I finally received a reply from Seitencacher this morning. I doesn't really explain how they could call their gravy Gluten Free with rye malt extract right on the package, but what they said is that they no longer add malt extract. Here is the response below:

Thanks to all who responded and here are some of the comments I received:

Is the rye malt fairly far down on the ingredient list? If so, it is probably that the amount of gluten in the product can pass detection in gluten testing or at least be under the particular parts/million that a product needs to be to say it is gf. I have found this to be the case with a number of products, actually. I react to minute amounts of glutens, but not everybody does. Even the medical profession has issued a paper saying that a celiac must have so many parts/million of gluten before they react with gut damage. I do not remember the amounts, just remember reading the article which was posted here last summer, I believe. As I said earlier, I react to these products, but apparently not every celiac does. Hmmm....

Good question! Maybe we should ask them--do they have any contact info on
their package? I have used it before, and come to think of it, it was a bad
outcome for me. We need to look into this further.
--------------------------------
They are wrong. I wouldn't eat this gravy either. Did you call them and ask about it?
-------------------------------------
A lot of manufacturers don't seem to know that the OTHER grains (barley, rye, and oats) are as detrimental to our health as is wheat. Some cereal makers are now touting the fact that they are adding barley to cereals. Barley! AAACK!
I suspect as this problem grows, with manufacturers looking for wheat substitutes and turning to the other grains, we will see an increasing awareness on their part that these things, too, are not a good thing.
--------------------------
I am shocked, as I remember reading these ingredients on the package
before and thinking they were ok. I just checked the packages I have in
the frig, and sure enough I saw the rye malt extract listed! My guess is
this could be a European codex issue. IE: low enough to be considered GF
by their standards.
------------------------------
A big no no that's why one has to read ingredients
-------------------------
I really want to THANK YOU for this posting! I've used this product off and on for 2 years and never read the ingredients. Which is hard to believe since I am really good about doing that!
------------------

Anyway, apparently the problem has been solved, but you would think that they would recall the packages that state gluten free, but I guess it is not important enough to them.

Regards,
Diana in RI
