I could still run the signal through my computer to watch tv on my monitor? I'm trying to eliminate my tv in my bedroom. I do not want to purchase another tv, the one I have is on the blink.

No, you will always need to use your cable, or satellite box, for
additional channels, because they provide more then over the air channels.
The signal from such sources is encrypted, and decoded within the box. Some
newer TVs support the new cable / satellite plug in SIMMs, which forgo the
need for a box, but, as of now, such SIMMs loose the bi-directional signal
you get with the box, and are not available for use on a PC device.
Of course, you can always use any cable box, or satellite box, though the
<Line In> ports of your capture device to record any of it's available
channels. In fact, when recording TV, you will get a far better result if
you use your cable box, particularly, a digital cable box, through <Line
In> on your capture card.
