Privy Council approves university title for Bolton
[Issue date:27 January 2005]
The Privy Council has approved the new university title for Bolton Institute –The University of Bolton. Its new name will become effective from today (27 January 2005).
As the UK’s newest university, The University of Bolton will continue to focus on developing its students in a challenging academic environment that prepares them for real jobs in a real world. The new title will strengthen the university’s reputation in research and development and support plans to expand enterprise activity. It will support the university’s international standing and help create new partnerships around the world.
Said Vice Chancellor, Mollie Temple: ‘Today is an historic one in the life of our university – this is tremendous news for us and everyone associated with us. Our staff and students are delighted that the quality of their work and their achievements has now been officially recognised.’
Consultation on the new title took place last year, following the Privy Council recommendation that University Title be approved for Bolton Institute. Feedback was received from partner universities and colleges, government agencies, students, academics, businesses, community groups and individuals in Bolton and across the UK. It was from this consultation process that The University of Bolton emerged as the most popular title choice.
It was then necessary to submit the Title to the Privy Council, one of the oldest parts of the Government, for final approval.
