Since the big orange gourd was secreted up the to spire in the middle of
the night, I think it's better the pumpkin was able to fall in peace and
quiet (as quiet as a cherry picker can be). Perhaps it would have been
embarrassed to fall from grace in front of a huge gathering of merry melon
mongers.

It was also reported (in the NY Times) that the pumpkin's eventual bow to
gravity happened only hours before a Planned Grand Ceremony to take the
thing down in front of assembled crowds and bigwigs-- and that the fall
was caused by an errant swing by a cherry-picker crane on a test run up
the spire. I woulda paid a dollar to see the look on the operator's
face...
