Since XM's signal is on a wavelength of perhaps 7 inches, the little
antennas they supply can do about as much as you would want, unless
you built a beam or a helical antenna and pointed it at the
satellite. I get excellent reception out my front window, and can
also move the antenna from the window sill to the floor with no
noticeable effects. Perhaps an antenna with some gain would help
during times of heavy precipitation, I don't know.
