Thanks to all who responded, both on-list, and in private e-mail offering
suggestions to address my shutdown problem.

A combination of disk cleanup (no problems reported) and following steps in
"help/startup and shutdown" seems to have cleared the problem that had been
nagging me for a couple of months.
