I would have to look it up, but from memory, no. It is specific types of
bacteria that are good, some make B12, others don't. If it worked well, the
ovo-lacto vegetarians would not have the highest problem with B12 deficiency,
and vegans would not be as free from problems as we are. I know fermented
products in the diet, still containing living bacteria, to form colonies in
the colon are vital to the production of B12. Even if yogert and cheese
bacteria were good sources, this would not survive the stomach acid. The key
would be to have the bacteria survive and set up housekeeping in the colon.
this is very much what happens when we breast feed as babies. The L-bifidus
bacteria, which seems to be so important to our health, is from natural flora
on our mothers breast we get as infants. Modern yogert and cheese are made
with enzymes, not live bacteria, so they wouldn't help. If you have real
living cultures such as a kefir grain that may be different.

I know that on a good vegan diet as an adult with plenty of fresh greens and
other living foods, we have not problems. If the food is cooked you have the
same problem--- killing the bacteria. So any cooked food in which the flora
is killed will not create a situation that supports the manufacture of
healthful B12 making flora in the gut. A percentage of the diet must be
fresh and raw to be healthful, whatever the diet. The reason organ meat
eaters do have high levels of B12, is not their own production, it is that
enough is taken in that it makes it into the system. A vegan without any
coming in makes their own, if they have healthful flora. A meat eater that
does not have good bacteria is dependant on external sources, but those
sources are high in B12.

So it is talking about different things. As a vegan I seek to keep my own
bacteria well, and they keep me well. These bacteria make the B12 I need. I
don't believe I need external supplementation. A meat eater with out healtful
flora is dependent on external supplementation.

thanks

Jerry
