Hi Greg,
Welcome to the ranks and we look forward to hearing you have gotten your
license. As far as radios that are accessible, you couldn't go wrong with a
Kenwood TM-G707 or TM-V7A. Both of these are dual band radios (2 meters and
70 centimeters) and have speech available. They can be a little expensive.
If you want to minimize your costs, purchase a Kenwood TH-F6A handheld which
is 2 meters, 220 and 440 bands. Then, if you want to use it on the base
station, purchase a small amplifier which will put out about 30 watts with 2
in or so and run the whole mess off a 12 volt power supply.
