Howard,
The virtual printer is more powerful than you might first think.  If your
pdf document is fromed from a text document, adobe with a screen reader may
do a reasonably good job.  However, if the pdf document is produced from
scanned images, your screen reader will show a blank page.  On the other
hand, the virtual printer under Kurzweil 1000 will recognize the images and
give you a text rendering.
