My original message to the Celiac List was as follows:
" I am scheduled for a routine colonscopy this week, and I just received a prescription in the mail from the gastroenterologist for TriLyte with flavor packs. I have sent an e-mail to the manufacturer (Schwarz Pharma) asking about gluten status for the TriLyte and the flavor packs, but I may not receive a response from them in time. TriLyte appears to be gluten free (unless there is cross contamination) but the company says "See individual flavor packs for complete listing of ingredients." I have to turn in the prescription by hand on Monday; the procedure is on Wednesday. I would like to find out if there is a problem with this prep as soon as I can.
Does anyone have information on the gluten status of TriLyte with flavor packs?"
I e-mailed Schwarz Pharma on Saturday and received an e-mail reply promptly first thing Monday morning saying:
"Please contact our Medical and Drug Information Department at (800) 558-5114."
I called and the customer representative stated that TriLyte and all of the flavor packs did not contain wheat, rye, barley, or oats. She added that one ingredient of the flavor packs might contain corn gluten. I said that corn was not one of the grains celiacs had to avoid. She said that a celiac who had called a week ago about TriLyte had said celiacs had to avoid wheat, rye, barley, oats, and corn. I assured her that the only grain prolamines or proteins that were toxic to celiac were those of wheat, rye, barley, and oats. I noted that anyone, celiac or non-celiac, could have a sensitivity to corn gluten, but that this sensitivity was unrelated to celiac disease and did not cause damage to the villi. Unfortunately, the person passing out the misinformation had done a good selling job, and I'm afraid that I was unable to convince her that corn gluten was okay for celiacs.
