I have had pretty good success using cards by Promise Technology.  If my
memory serves me correctly, I have used their 4300 series on two systems.
It has an on board bios that boots up in three different modes and it will
support up to four hard drives. The cards I used was for VLB systems on
486s.  I never had any quality issues with the two I had used so the
brand, Promise Technology, worked for me about two years ago.
