Dear e-Advocates,

When Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita roared ashore last month, people with
disabilities faced overwhelming challenges.

Some people with disabilities lost their lives because they could not escape.
Others escaped but could not evacuate with assistive equipment or guide animals
that enabled their independence. Many more were turned away from inaccessible
shelters because of their disability, while those that were welcomed didn't
receive essential services.

A national network of nonprofit community service providers for people with all
disabilities, United Cerebral Palsy responded quickly to the crisis.

We created systems for clients and employees to communicate, we located and
distributed thousands of pounds of medical equipment, and we helped displaced
families find accessible housing and affordable health services.

Nevertheless, United Cerebral Palsy continues to face a complex problem of
providing comprehensive relief to thousands of people with disabilities spread
out over a large geographic area with limited unaffected structures of support.

We need your help today!

By donating to the United Cerebral Palsy <http://www.ucp.org/donate> Hurricane
Relief Fund, you will help us provide services, wheelchairs and housing to
families who desperately need our help. Every dollar donated to this special
fund will go directly to our relief efforts.

Please visit our Web site today at www.ucp.org/donate, and lend a hand to people
with disabilities and their families affected by this disaster.

Sincerely,

Like hundreds of thousands of other hurricane Katrina evacuees, 13-year-old
Curtis arrived in Texas with little more than the clothes on his back. Yet
unlike most survivors, Curtis has cerebral palsy and was forced to flee his home
without the electric wheelchair that enables his mobility. Literally carried to
Houston by his mother and sister, Curtis needed some special help to regain his
independence. That is where United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Houston stepped in.
