Hi Don,

I need to know what braille software your friend is using to
give a complete answer, so some of this at the end will
relate to Duxbury, the one I know best.

The process is basically the same for installing a new
printer.

Your friend who only has USB Ports will first have to obtain
and install a USB to Parallel Adapter.

These will usually install and set themselves up to a "Port"
possible called something like "USB#### (Virtual Printer
Port for USB)

Connect everything up and make sure the embosser is on-line.

You now go to "Printers and Faxes". (in Control Panel in XP
Home or off the Start Menu in XP Professional)

Select "Add a Printer", and when asked, select a "Local
Printer".

When asked to "Use the Following Port" (Radio button that
needs to be checked) open up the list and look for the
USB#### port as described above.)

You will then be asked to "Install Printer Software". So,
for Manufacturer, select "Generic", and for "Printers"
select "Generic / Text Only".

When asked for a "Printer Name" enter one which you will
recognise when asked to send something to a printer.
"Braille Blazer" is as good as anything. Complete the
process.

You should now be able to go into WordPad, Notepad, Word or
whatever, type a few words such as "the quick brown fox
jumped over the lazy dog", and print as you would to a
printer, but select "Braille Blazer" as the printer.

If it fires up and you can read it, you are almost there.

Now, if using Duxbury, go to Global: Embosser Setup. Set up
your Braille Blazer as per DBT's normal procedure, but in
the "General" Tab, under "Output Options" select the "Send
to Printer" Radio Button.

Tab once, and in the drop down list, select "Braille Blazer"
or whatever you called it above.

O.K. form there, and test it with Duxbury.

George.

Subject: [VICUG-L] Blazer and USB:

I have a friend who just bought a used blazer. She's only
got a USB port on her computer.

In setting up the Braille program should she be calling the
output LPT1 or something else?

Thanks in advance.

The Second Amendment is in place in case the politicians
ignore the others.
