<<<I checked to see if the
Accessibility had somehow changed and then opened display in the control
settings to check screen size and well it definetly had changed and when I
tried several times to change it back was unsuccessful. It would tell me to
restart my box for the new settings to take and every time I tried it
reverted to:16 Colors and 640 x 480 pixels. >>>

To me it appears that your video drivers have somehow been corrupted.

I tried to ascertain the video details from the Dell site for your model but find there are " Dell home system dimension xps Gen-5, gen-2,gen 600 and so could not figure out which specific model you have.

so if you can post the specific model of your system or details of your video card (seperate or on board) or locate the appropriate drivers and install I think your problem will be solved

Good luck---Venkat Viswanathan
