1) You can probably connect the router to the DSL line and the desktop's
NIC to a port on the router. If the laptop didn't come with wireless
capability (many do now...), you'll need a wireless adapter, probably either
PCMCIA/PCCARD or USB.
By "USB memory stick", I assume you mean something like a flash drive.
They're cool to have, but completely independent of connecting to the
Internet. (I have one, but I've found it more useful to equip my home and
work systems with USB "card readers" for SD cards, which also fit in my
digital camera and PDA which don't have USB ports.)
2) Not generally. Laptops are tightly optimized for weight and power
consumption, and third maybe is price. Upgradability is not a design
priority, and so while a few models allow memory upgrades, you're not likely
to have much option with the video.
