Sounds to me like the adapter or coax from the adapter to the antenna are
bad, so long as it works with the stock rubber duck, that's the right
setting for mode and I'd definitely not use an adapter that would put strain
on the sma connector, having some cable there from the SMA to the coax
pl-259, for relieving stress on the SMA is definitely the best way to go.
I'd be checking the coax and adapter for a short or something unless the
antenna's up against the building or something that might cause a problem
there and the radio works on the stock rubber duck.

Subject: another T90A question

Hi, all.

You guys did such a great job answering last night's question about running
the T90A with a 12-volt power supply that I have another one.

Again, this is for my son, Dan, KC8DNO.

He wants to use the T90A HT with an antenna that has a pl259 coax
connection. At a recent ham fest, I bought him an adapter cable to go from
the SMA male connector on the T90A, to a pl259. It's the same exact cable
that I use for my Kenwood THF6A HT.

I know that the antennna he's using is ok, since I tested it here at the
house and came up with great signals and a 1.1 to 1 SWR reading. He
indicates that the radio sounds rather noisy on receive, and that he can't
get into most of the local Kalamazoo, MI repeaters. He also tells me that
the adapter cable doesn't quite screw down all the way onto the male SMA
connector on the HT, thereby leading me to think he's not making good
electrical contact.

Is there a special SMA to PL259 adapter cable that we should be buying
specifically for the T90A? What do others on the list use if you want to go
from a SMA to a PL259 connection on the T90A?

I have a couple of SMA to BNC adapters, but I prefer the cables, since those
adapters seem to put an awful lot of strain on the SMA connector in the
radio.

Any suggestions?

Also, I'm telling Dan to be sure that the T90A is set on "narrow FM", rather
than "wide FM". He says it is on "narrow fm", or "FM", according to the
menus in the radio. Is this correct?

Dan and I thank you for all of your help.
