As one of the old goats on the list and in the hobbby, I had to take
my thirteen WPM test at the F C C Field Office in Chicago. All of
the examiners at that time, late fifties, seemed like grumpy, sacry
old guys who enjoyed it when you failed, but I fooled him and managed
to pass both the code and the multiple choice written General
exam. I did well enough that we didn't have to work through the
xchematic which counted for part of the grade.
I decided that I would never want to use C W since it had been so
hard to get up to the thirteen words - but somewhere along the line I
tried it and learned to like it. Early eighties; calendar, not my
age!! and I got my Extra. V E examiners gave me that test and the
code was the easy part!!
I am sad to see Morse code dropped as an element for ham
licensing. Many newcomers won't learn to hate and then enjoy it as a
mode of communications, and sometimes, it does get through when other
modes won't do the job.
So, if you know the code, use it and gain some proficiency - you
might learn to enjoy it. And even if you don't, enjoy the hobby. It
is a great place to spend time.
