I finally reformatted my machine, installing a clean copy of XP, rather than HP's junkware. It took me two months to finally get all the drivers for the integrated components, but now I have a clean install (instead of an HP restore and then attempt to remove stuff). My C partition is now less than half the size it was when it contained all of HP's garbage, plus that "special partition." And my disk is now partitioned the way *I* want it, with My Documents on a separate partition. I will never by another HP/Compaq machine - or Dell or Gateway again unless they provide each software item separately and individually for self-installation.

I do not know whether the machine is "pre" or "post" hp-compaq (to be honest I am not sure this is the correct answer.....) but it rings a bell!

the disk space HP's "Recovery Partition E" uses up, I had to Install HP XP,
delete a bunch of garbage, including Norton Anti-Virus 2002, Wild Tangent
(HP admitted that they "kept costs down" by selling space on my disk to
advertisers), etc.,
Now I'm
wondering if I might have removed something that would have allowed Word to
install correctly.
Oddly, just yesterday, I received
notification about a class-action lawsuit against HP for the "Recovery
Partition" thing."
