another issue.  if this is the only tape that squeaks then the tape itself
may be degenerating.  i saw a story a long time ago on 60 minutes about
the library of congress and how many of their tape archives were
degenerating.  they would bake the tape for hours in a warm oven to get
one more good read out of them and then they would re-record them.
