Your memory served you well, other than I had to click onto the
"Recording Controls" icon, and then click on the icon above the
microphone.
This is a new computer, with all new software, so it seems to me
that this is a bit of an installation error on the part of CL.

I had the same problem, it took me a while to figure it out. I am going
from
memory, but I think it is correct.
First of all, you want to mute the microphone in your standard volume
controls.
This may sound weird, but not being muted is what causes it to amplify
back
through the speakers.
Second, from your AWE 64 program group off your start menu, open the
mixer
application. You should see a slider for the mic. Just above it is a
little icon
in a box. Click on the icon so you see red "sound waves" in it. The
microphone
should now be enabled.
