A friend brought me an Acer laptop that won't boot. HD just cycles.
I connected this HD (Toshiba) via USB to my XP Home computer (All updates),
which sees it in "Safely Remove hardware", but not in disk manager or
explorer. I can't "populate" the volume.
My XP Pro system (All updates) recognizes it, and shows 4 partitions in Disk
manager. The active partition, 2 FAT32 ( 9 GB and 8 MB) partitions which
seem to be Acer info, and a 94MB, unformatted partition.
I cannot explore or format the primary, active partition. Error is "the
format did not complete successfully.
Event viewer show error 51, which suggests a replacement is in order.
I plan to replace the drive, but I'm curious as to what could cause one
partition to fail.
