  I've just discovered that, by pressing Tab (perhaps a few times) I could
get the list of files back into alphabetical order and into the condition I
wanted, with access bia repeated pressing of a the first letter of a file's
name.

  Telling someone about a problem often seems to free my mind to think of
new approaches to its solution.  Thanks for being such tolerant listeners.
