I tend to think first of sexual/social drives, which couldn't get out
of hand in a hunter/gatherer milieu, but perhaps with fire and the very
first clue about agriculture, encouraged us to try to form larger units
with more permanence, making the substitution of ready-at-hand food for
hunted more attractive.

I also think, off topic, that we probably have never been emotionally
well-equipped for "pack" life, and keep messing up because of that:)
