I've seen this before, and I know what you mean.
Remember, there's an icon for the wired and the wireless connection, so
one can be connected, while the other isn't, thus the red x.
You can control the appearance of this icon in the properties dialogue
box of the connection.
In most cases, you're better off letting windows configure the
connection, but this just doesn't work well with some adapters.
I've solved this with a firmware update in some cases-ymmv.
