In my experience, problems which don't affect normal startup, but which
show up after use for a while or on reset are likely to be heat problems.
But problems like yours, which show up on cold boots but not on resets, are
more likely to be POWER problems.

  There are several components which can require significantly more power to
start "cold" than to keep running or reset.  And if your machine is a couple
of years old, the output of the power supply may no longfer be what the
manufacturer rated it as.
