Sometimes monitor degaussing circuits are not strong enough for the
"very strong magnet up close" situation that may occur with children.
Places like Radio Shack or electronic/video tape supply stores sell a
video tape bulk eraser. It plugs into the wall and creates a STRONG
alternating magnet field. The trick is to use it correctly. Plug it in
and keep away from your computer and monitor. Then slowly approach the
front of the monitor and in a circular motion, move the eraser around
the face of the monitor (you do not have to touch the monitor!). After
several sweeps, keep moving it in a circular motion and back away from
the monitor, going back to your starting point. Turn off the eraser.
Power up the monitor and see if the spots are gone.
Warning: keep disks and other items subject to magnetic erasure far away
from the eraser (i.e., if you have your wallet with credit cards by your
monitor, move them or they will be erased!)
Hope this helps.
