Palestinian Children's Dance Troupe to appear in Madison

On Thursday Nov. 3, the world-renowned Ibdaa Children's Dance Troupe from
the West Bank will perform for the first time in Madison at 7:30 pm at the
Union Theater, UW Memorial Student Union on Langdon Street.

The event is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by Madison-Rafah
Sister City Project, the Arab Student Association, and Al-Awda Wisconsin.

This group of 10 boys and 10 girls, all between the ages of 10 and 13, is
touring major cities in the U.S. under the sponsorship of the San
Francisco-based Middle East Children's Alliance (MECA), Combining
traditional "debke" dance and brilliant costumes with a modern narrative
about their experiences as Palestinian refugees growing up and living in
Dheisheh camp near Bethlehem, the Ibdaa children's troupes have performed
all over the world to great acclaim. (For pictures and information, visit
http://www.dheisheh-ibdaa.net/dance.htm.)

About Ibdaa
Ibdaa means "to create something out of nothing". The youth dance troupes,
now training a fourth generation of dancers, are a project of the Ibdaa
Cultural Center, a grassroots organization which provided social,
educational and cultural programs for the children, youth and women of
Dheisheh refugee camp.

The center's goal is to provide an environment for young people to develop
their creativity and leadership skills through activities that are not
readily available in a refugee camp environment.

It also stresses empowerment of women through the Ibdaa Women's Committee,
which runs a handicrafts cooperative, kindergarten and nursery, and
organizes social, educational and health programs for women and girls.

Other projects include a children's mental health service, the only
children's library in the camp, a health committee, sports, and the Ibdaa
Guesthouse, the only guesthouse in a Palestinian refugee camp.

Please spread the word and plan to join us on Nov. 3. You will not be
disappointed!

details of appearances in other cities as well.)
