This is particularly fascinating to me having spent the last week in the Bitterroot and Big Hole valleys in western Montana. One of the places we went to was the Big Hole National Battlefield where the U.S. Army fought the fleeing Nez Perce. 130 years ago when this skirmish occurred, the Nez Perce ate salmon and camas root as their staple food items with yearly pilgrimages to buffalo lands to the east.
