I am on a weight loss diet right now (less fat and calories) and I am
consuming about 12-16 ounces of bison meat (quite lean) a day in 4-7
small meals of about 2-3 ounces of meat each. The protocol I'm
following helps maintain blood-sugar (small meals often) so that
cravings for "bad" foods do not overwhelm my judgment. Weight goal is
175 lbs or so, presently at 195 lbs at 6 feet 1 inch height.
By the way I also did some surfing and found similar calculations to
yours (most seemed to be based on present weight - not the goal). I
would not place too much stock in them as they are not designed for
paleo eaters.
I also went to a local gym health nutritionist and with the regimen he
recommended (still paleo) I'd get about 2000 calories or so each day
which equates to about 6 ounces of meat at each meal (multiplied by 5 to
6 meals)- I found that about half the amount of his recommendation works
alright for me (but I am also slowly increasing the amount). Details
(not paleo I think): each meal-> Protein=40gm (40%), carb=35gm (35%),
fat=11gm (25%) plus 16 oz water. With his meal planner I note that 6.25
oz (177 gm) of bison has about 38.8 grams of protein and 3.1 grams of
fat. Note: the difference in total weight to actual protein and fat -
the rest must be water, etc. Hope this proves to be helpful.
Together with some gym training I find that I'm gaining lean muscle and
losing fat in almost equal proportions - so the weight loss is slow but
my girth is shrinking relatively quickly.
I'm curious - do we need to be aware of kidney function eating this
amount of meat?
