FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

First Annual Professor Roberto G. Sanchez Award

Centro Hispano of Dane County, in collaboration with the Madison Community
Foundation, announces the establishment of the First Annual Professor
Roberto G. Sanchez Award. The award honors the values of academic
excellence and Latino heritage in general. Professor Sanchez is the
recipient of the first annual award named in his honor. The Award will be
presented at Centro Hispano’s 15th Annual Dinner on Friday, October 22,
2004.

Professor Sanchez is highly regarded for his long and successful career
teaching Spanish literature at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. After
retirement he devoted most of the last two decades to community volunteer
work in the Madison area. In 1999 Professor Sanchez established a Madison
Community Foundation endowment to forever benefit Madison’s Latino public
school students. This year the first Sanchez scholar graduated from high
school and is enrolled in Beloit College, where she is currently a freshman.
To date a total of eleven scholars are enrolled in Madison high schools.

Upon learning of being the Award’s first recipient, Professor Sanchez said:
“I accept it with humility and gratitude … The award is an invitation and a
challenge to all who believe in the future and promise of young Hispanics.”

Inspired by this noble challenge, Centro Hispano’s Director, Peter Munoz,
and his wife Pamela Munoz, made a personal commitment to contribute $10,000
as seed money to start an endowment for Centro Hispano. Munoz said: “Centro
will need to play even a more significant role in the future to ensure the
success of our growing community. An endowment provides assurance that
resources will forever be available to this wonderful organization.”

Pamela Munoz said: “Professor Sanchez has been an outstanding role model
and profound source of inspiration for Peter and me. We hope that others
will be inspired as well and will consider contributing to this endowment.”
The Madison Community Foundation will hold the endowment.
